Do YOU Need a Blessing?

iStock-1028879552 Stretch out your hands and receive the blessing.

Come away with me for a moment in your imagination. I have a treasure for you tucked within the pages of an ancient text…

Imagine you were born long, long ago.

There is a king and you are a lowly servant far beneath his royalty. You are summoned to attend an ancient Middle Eastern court, but you have nothing special to wear, to give, to share. You wonder why the king would want you there.

You're amazed when you hand over your invitation, sure you'll be accused of stealing it, but instead you're ushered in. You stay well back, near the door for a ready escape if anyone challenges your attendance.

Your hands feel clammy, and a trickle of sweat drips down your spine. Your legs tremble beneath the folds of your home spun gown as you glance around the room filled with subjects you deem far more worthy of an invite than you. One look at the lavish banquet, the ornate architecture and the gleaming throne and your insides tumble and lurch.

For you are small—the Monarch is great.

You are poor—the Ruler owns all the riches of the world.

You are unknown—His Majesty is powerful and sovereign, known throughout the land.

Then the King of Kings lifts up His hands and room hushes. Not a whisper can be heard. He opens his mouth to speak. His voice like that of water converging in a narrow gorge and hurtling over a waterfall fills the room. It builds to a crescendo like the thundering power of a million tons of water crashing to a canyon floor.

"I AM the LORD and I bless you and keep you."

You shake. Everything within you longs to fall to your knees. You struggle to remain upright for everyone else is.

"I the LORD make My face shine upon you."

You understand these words. If His face is shining upon you, you're invited into the inner circle, an intimate relationship, a friendship. Could the King of Kings really mean what He is inviting? You think, surely, I'm are not meant to be there.

He keeps speaking. His voice thickens. It rises and falls like the sound of crashing waves breaking upon a rocky shore. Soft then loud. Tender then tumultuous.

"I will be gracious to you."

You long to look up for His words draw you in, spoken as if they were meant just for you but you keep your head bent low. There is no strength left within you and you slip to your knees. You no longer care what anyone around you thinks. Those words…those beautiful words are too glorious, too inviting, too intimate to stand in His presence.

Like a silk spun in silence a cocoon of love envelops you, flowing to you, around you, through you. Tears leak from your eyes and flow down your cheeks.

This time His words sound like they are coming closer, as gentle as a bubbling brook, water dancing over rocks happily meandering to places unknown. You see feet shuffle to either side of you and an open breeze tickles your bent neckline. There is no way you are looking up.

"I the LORD lift up My countenance upon you."

You feel the hand of the King of Kings, the LORD of LORDS beneath your chin. His gentle touch nudges your head up. You look into His face and witness the most beautiful smile ever bestowed upon you. You can not begin to fathom such favor. You feel unprepared, unworthy, unholy, but there is genuine love pouring from His eyes.

He not only lifts your head, but He takes your hand and helps you to your feet. You no longer tremble you float in joy as you walk beside Him to the front of the room. Every eye is upon you…the mere servant, the pauper is receiving the attention of royalty.

The crowd of noblemen and women, lords and aristocrats lean in to catch His final words as He whispers.

"I give you peace my child. I give you peace."

The gift of His presence, this King of Kings, LORD of LORDS, Hosts of Hosts fills every fiber of your being and all the troubles of this world fade away.

You have been blessed beyond measure.

You are full of peace.

You smile up at Him and He smiles down at you.

This is not just a story…this is your story. Go read Numbers 6:24-26 and receive your blessing…words from the Almighty Himself directly to you.

  • Still the troubled thoughts that besiege you
  • Soak in these words
  • Saturate your mindset with this truth until it suffuses your being.

Post Note: I refer to the sound of God's voice as that of water as per Revelation. 1:15, Psalm 29:3-5 and Ezekiel 1:24

Please listen to this beautiful rendition of this blessing done in song by Misha Goetz and Joshua Aaron. I'm sure you will be moved to tears like I was.
