THERE IS POWER IN THE NAME

The LORD

A Devotion to enrich your weekly prayer life.

My hope and prayer is that you will read this blog each Monday morning and that your prayer-life will be enriched during the following week  by praying this specific Name of God. I personally have found incredible comfort and power in understanding and praying the different names of God, so-much-so, I feel a burning desire to share them with you. If you too, find power, encouragement or comfort, pass this devotion onto others.

The LORD (in caps), translated Yahweh in the Old Testament was first used in Genesis 2:4 This is the history of the heavens and the earth when they were created, in the day that the LORD God made the earth and the heavens.

In reading this verse I instantly thought of the lunar eclipse this past week. Though I shivered in the cold winter air, the crisp view of twinkling stars and a half-darkened moon mesmerized me. I watched the phenomenon of the eclipse slowly unfold. A smallness and an awe came over me. My heart swelled with praise that such an incredible Lord Jehovah who created the vast universe, knew and loved little old me … and He loves you too.

The LORD is the most frequently used name in the Old Testament occurring over 6823 times. In Hebrew it is "havah" meaning, "to be" or "being." This verb denotes a God who has no beginning, no end, a living being, unchanging, ever-living, One who remains faithful through all generations.

So, what does this mean to us?

Our LORD who is righteousness and must deal with sin Ex. 32.33 is also equally, a Lord of great love. Ex. 34:6-7 "The LORD, the LORD God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin…" In order to deal with our sinful nature the LORD sent his son Jesus to die for our sin. When we accept this truth, it is just the beginning of our walk with Him. From that day forward He is our constant friend, strength, and guide.

Following Jesus' death and resurrection Paul used the name Lord over 200 times. Kurios is the Greek translation of the sacred name Yahweh used in the Old Testament. In doing this Paul was equating Jesus to a member of the Godhead, showing recognition of his divinity.

Romans 10:9 says, "If you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved."

Phil. 2:10,11 "At the name of Jesus every knee should bow of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

Dear one, know this week that you are loved and protected by the LORD who is the same yesterday, today and forever. What He did for the patriarchs of old, He will do for you. Call out to your LORD and He will be with you in your circumstance. You are precious in His sight.

1 Chronicles 16:23-34 is a beautiful prayer using the name of the LORD ten times. I encourage you to open your Bible and pray this prayer. Be creative. Make up your own tune unto the Lord and sing out these words. Walk around and lift your hands in praise reading out this passage. Or sit quietly by the fire in silent meditation—allow these words to pour over you, to you, and through you. The power of the LORD will fall upon you.

A very intimate and poignant devotional. I love the photo and often wonder how anyone could view a night sky and not long to know Jehovah, Creator.
